About the position
The Highway Maintenance Laborer position with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) involves performing general maintenance on Indiana highways and interstates to ensure they are clean and safe. This entry-level role offers opportunities for career advancement and requires mandatory overtime during emergency operations, particularly in winter conditions.
Responsibilities
- Pick up trash and debris from highways and interstates.
- Fill potholes and maintain drainage systems.
- Plow snow during winter months.
- Assist with traffic control during emergency road closures.
- Comply with INDOT safety policies and procedures.
- Operate basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment.
- Move and load supplies and materials.
- Perform regular inspections and routine equipment maintenance.
- Engage in emergency response activities such as clean-up and lane closures.
Requirements
- A valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or ability to obtain within 90 days.
- Pass and submit to a drug test as a condition of employment.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods.
- Ability to endure exposure to inclement weather.
- Ability to operate specialty traffic equipment.
Nice-to-haves
