About the position

The HIM Specialist is responsible for the accurate and timely management of medical records within the hospital's electronic medical record (EMR) system. This role involves scanning, indexing, and tracking health records, ensuring compliance with established guidelines and quality standards. The specialist plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of medical documentation and actively participates in performance improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Receive, scan, and index medical record documents into the hospital's EMR system.
• Prepare medical records for scanning and batch cover sheets.
• Conduct quality reviews and ensure completeness of uploaded batches.
• Track, retrieve, and follow up on health records as needed.
• Sort loose health record documents received daily and index materials promptly.
• Ensure that incomplete records and medical record forms are processed according to guidelines.
• Represent the organization positively and professionally.
• Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• One year of experience with medical record keeping systems in an acute care setting or physician office.
• Strong knowledge of medical records practices, policies, and procedures, including HIPAA compliance.
• Understanding of clinical workflows and medical terminology.
• Basic computer skills and ability to use software for scanning and indexing.
