About the position

Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in a variety of horticultural activities, and performs related work as required. The position involves maintaining greenhouse and conservatory buildings, grounds, and park gardens, as well as operating various gardening equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains greenhouse and conservatory building, grounds and park gardens
  • Waters and weeds plants
  • Plants and transplants seedlings at proper time into proper environments
  • Mixes and applies liquid and solid pesticides and fertilizers
  • Assists in setting shows in conservatory
  • Controls vents, heat valves, and temperature in greenhouses and conservatory
  • Makes cuttings and collects seeds from various plants
  • Labels and names plants
  • Conducts tours
  • Operates lawn mowers, tillers, dump trucks, and loaders
  • Performs minor tree pruning
  • Acts as lead worker in the assignment and direction of seasonal employees
  • Performs snow removal
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in ornamental horticulture, floriculture, or related field plus two (2) years of commercial horticultural or landscaping experience; or
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent plus four (4) years of commercial horticultural or landscaping experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the required work in this position.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license upon application
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver's License Permit (CDLP) within 30 days of appointment
  • Obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement within 90 days of appointment and maintain throughout duration of employment
  • Must obtain pesticide applicators certification within six months of hire
  • Must pass a physical examination and background check as prescribed by the city
  • Must reside in Iowa or Illinois within two (2) years of hire and maintain residency throughout the duration of employment
