About the position

The Horticulture Supervisor at the Bronx Zoo is responsible for managing the Horticulture department, overseeing the maintenance and appearance of the zoo's 265 acres. This role involves supervising staff, coordinating horticultural activities, and ensuring a clean and attractive environment for guests. The supervisor will also assist the Maintenance Department as needed, contributing to the overall guest experience at the zoo.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise staff scheduling and manage day-to-day operations of the Horticulture department.
  • Assist Maintenance staff in snow removal and plowing operations when necessary.
  • Determine planting and supply needs with guidance from the Director of M&H and coordinate activities of contracted arborists.
  • Supervise staff in large plantings, routine landscaping, lawn maintenance, weeding, trimming, and storm cleanup work.
  • Conduct hiring, training, evaluation, and disciplinary actions for permanent and seasonal staff as necessary.
  • Coordinate work with Curators, managers, and supervisors in other departments to maintain the desired appearance of the Park and exhibits.
  • Maintain records required by the department, including tree maintenance records and SDS manuals.
  • Represent the department at internal meetings or with outside agencies as requested by the Director of M&H.
  • Monitor department functions through daily inspections of job sites and document inspections as required.
  • Assist the Maintenance department in cleanup after weather events.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience supervising staff and managing teams.
  • Knowledge and proven experience in groundskeeping, lawn maintenance, and snow removal.
  • Ability to manage union staff and understand labor contracts.
  • Computer literacy, especially in Microsoft Office; familiarity with SAP or other purchasing software is desirable.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to work in varied environments, including all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture or a related field preferred.
