About the position

ADNET Systems, Inc. is seeking a Linux System Administrator for a position at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The candidate must demonstrate an ability to proactively manage systems and mitigate issues before they become problems. They will work in a production and real-time processing environment that includes changing scientific and security requirements over time, and must be physically able to come to the GSFC site to physically work on hardware systems such as servers and tape libraries. The position will support NASA's Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF) - the NASA active and permanent archive for space physics data. SPDF preserves data for current and past space missions, going back to the beginning of the space age. It provides access through many services, including the popular Coordinated Data Analysis Web (CDAWeb) data browsing system, and enables cross-disciplinary and collaborative research worldwide. The SPDF team is a diverse and congenial group of about 20 staff whose core values include excellence, integrity, transparency, and teamwork. The systems administrator is a crucial part of this team and enables these popular services to run securely and efficiently. SPDF uses a variety of open-source tools, creative IT approaches, and powerful hardware to accomplish its mission.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively manage systems and mitigate issues before they become problems.
  • Work in a production and real-time processing environment.
  • Physically work on hardware systems such as servers and tape libraries at the GSFC site.
  • Support NASA's Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF) and its data archiving services.
  • Ensure the secure and efficient operation of services provided by SPDF.

Requirements

  • At least five years experience with Linux administration, particularly Red Hat Enterprise Linux or its derivatives.
  • Experience working in a Data Center.
  • Experience setting up Network File Sharing (NFS) servers and clients.
  • Experience setting up webservers.
  • Experience troubleshooting network connection issues.
  • A working knowledge of firewall configuration.
  • Ability to install and configure open source and third-party software.
  • Knowledge of systems backup and restoration (Bacula).
  • Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented, and methodical.
  • Initiative and experience in managing projects independently.
  • Excellent communications skills, written and verbal, including the ability to discern the intent of requests and offer informed recommendations.
  • Evidence of learning new packages and processes quickly and accurately (continuous learner).
  • US Citizenship is required for this position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of high availability and fault tolerant environments.
  • Experience implementing Government networking and operating system security controls.
  • The ability to adapt to changing security requirements and their impact on workflows.
  • Software development experience, especially in Bash, Perl, IDL, MATLAB, Python, C or Fortran.
  • Experience with SElinux.
  • Experience with open source packages, such as ZFS, Bacula, Apache, ProFTPd, PostgreSQL.
  • Basic competence with Git and Puppet, or similar source and system management tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to document workflows or data flows.
  • Experience in testing configuration and software changes in a development environment.
