The HVAC Engineering Mechanic at Lexington Medical Center is responsible for performing a variety of skilled tasks related to the construction and maintenance of hospital facilities and equipment, with a primary focus on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. In this role, the HVAC Engineering Mechanic will make routine and emergency repairs on various mechanical and electrical equipment, including plumbing systems and fixtures. The mechanic will also be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing systems related to water, steam, vacuum, compressed gases, sewerage, drainage, and automatic sprinkler lines. A significant part of the job involves responding to alarms from the building automation system, troubleshooting issues with HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, medical gas, and other systems, and coordinating repairs with appropriate personnel or vendors. The HVAC Engineering Mechanic will work with minimal supervision on various projects, including erecting walls, applying plasterboards, and repairing or installing building fixtures. The role requires evaluating work orders, coordinating with personnel to plan and execute tasks, and maintaining a safe work environment in accordance with infection control requirements. The mechanic will also be responsible for training and directing helpers and coworkers, ensuring that all work complies with hospital-specific life safety codes and requirements. Overall, this position plays a vital role in maintaining the hospital's operational integrity and ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and emergency repairs on mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Install and repair plumbing systems and fixtures, including pumps and gauges.
  • Respond to alarms from the building automation system and troubleshoot issues as needed.
  • Work rotating 'on-call' shifts as per Engineering 'On-Call' policy.
  • Inspect connections and parts of systems for leaks and damage, making repairs as necessary.
  • Construct and repair building parts, fixtures, and special equipment using hand and power tools.
  • Evaluate work orders and project requirements, coordinating with personnel to complete tasks.
  • Work with minimal supervision on various projects, ensuring a finished product is produced.
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment related to facilities construction and maintenance.
  • Navigate computerized work order software to manage tasks and document time spent on work orders.
  • Assist with construction projects where expertise is needed, working as a team member to ensure safety.
  • Train and direct helpers and coworkers, assisting other trades in building maintenance operations.
  • Maintain knowledge of current industry trends and hospital-specific life safety codes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in maintenance.
  • SC driver's license and acceptable driving history required.
  • Ability to read technical service manuals and blueprints with basic comprehension.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of LMC Engineering Mechanic Apprenticeship program can substitute for experience.
  • Knowledge of hospital-specific life safety codes and requirements.
