About the position

The HVAC Systems Mechanic position involves the installation, repair, and maintenance of various air quality systems within City facilities and buildings. The ideal candidate will be responsible for diagnosing maintenance problems on HVAC equipment and performing emergency repairs as needed. This role requires a strong understanding of heating, air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, and building automation systems. The HVAC Systems Mechanic will also be tasked with monitoring, programming, repairing, and adjusting digital controls and field devices to ensure optimal performance of building systems. Preventive maintenance tasks and system checks are essential to maintain proper indoor air quality, system efficiency, and occupant comfort. Under general supervision, the HVAC Systems Mechanic will respond to service requests and perform skilled diagnosis, repair, overhaul, and replacement work on a wide variety of HVAC equipment. The position is classified as journey-level, meaning incumbents typically work independently on maintenance assignments, referring only the most complex issues to a supervisor. The HVAC Systems Mechanic is expected to maintain accurate computerized records of work order activities and time sheets, ensuring that all tasks are documented appropriately. The role requires the ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members, as well as the capability to read blueprints and electrical diagrams. The HVAC Systems Mechanic must also be willing to be on-call and work nights, weekends, and holidays as required. Physical demands include lifting and carrying heavy equipment, working at heights, and performing tasks in confined spaces.
