About The Position

The HVAC Technician position at the University of Iowa Facilities Management involves operating, maintaining, and servicing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. The role requires diagnosing complex equipment problems and using sophisticated diagnostic tools. The position is available at three levels (I, II, III) based on the candidate's qualifications, and it is performed fully on campus.

Requirements

  • HVAC Technician I: Four years of experience in refrigeration, heating or air conditioning work, including apprenticeship; refrigeration certificate of at least type 2 within first six months of employment.
  • HVAC Technician II: Six years of experience in temperature and computerized building environmental automation systems, refrigeration or air conditioning work; refrigeration certificate of at least type 2; prefer 2 years of college/trade school.
  • HVAC Technician III: Eight years of experience in computerized building environmental automation systems, refrigeration or air conditioning work; Journeyman license required; prefer 2 years of college/trade school.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous soldering experience.
  • Previous Commercial / industrial HVAC experience.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Project work knowledge and use of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment.
  • Public contact / customer service experience.
  • Preventative maintenance and troubleshooting experience.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Good communication skills and experience working on a team.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and troubleshoot air-moving, heating, cooling, humidification and filtering equipment and systems.
  • Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair chillers and chilled water equipment.
  • Repair/replace defective parts and equipment.
  • Operate computerized building environmental automation systems that control heating and cooling systems.
  • Use specialized testing equipment for diagnostic evaluation.
  • Read and interpret prints, schematics, and diagrams.

Benefits

  • Starting pay rate for HVAC Technician I: $51,126.40
  • Starting pay rate for HVAC Technician II: $55,848.00
  • Starting pay rate for HVAC Technician III: $61,048.00
  • A higher starting pay rate may be requested based on exceptional qualifications.
