About the position

The HVAC Technician position at Alamance-Burlington Schools is a full-time role within the Maintenance department, responsible for performing a variety of mechanical maintenance functions across all trades and disciplines. The primary focus of this position is to maintain the District's heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems in compliance with Federal and State codes and requirements. The technician will be tasked with the installation of new equipment to replace existing systems, managing part orders, and troubleshooting HVAC equipment as necessary. Additionally, the role involves maintaining computerized building automation systems, handling electrical installations, and preparing electrical reports, along with other mechanical-related tasks as assigned. The HVAC Technician must possess considerable knowledge of departmental operating procedures, including work order and credit card procedures, as well as ISO procedures. A strong understanding of HVAC system replacement, common issues, and energy management techniques is essential. The technician will also need to be familiar with the tools and equipment used in the repair and replacement of HVAC systems, as well as the safety precautions associated with electrical work and other trades. The ability to learn and implement the operational capabilities of the District's computerized work order system is crucial, along with effective communication skills. Candidates for this position should have a high school diploma or GED, with an Associate's Degree in refrigeration preferred. While two years of experience maintaining commercial kitchen and refrigeration equipment is preferred, it is not mandatory. A valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles is required, and possession of an NC HVAC License/Certification and Universal EPA Certification is preferred. The HVAC Technician will report to the HVAC Mechanic Foreman and will not supervise any direct reports. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, with on-call availability as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs, replaces, and maintains all types of heating and cooling systems located in all school facilities.
  • Ensures the smooth, safe, and efficient operation of HVAC systems and related electrical components.
  • Familiarizes with all regulations and codes pertaining to electrical and HVAC maintenance.
  • Implements indoor air quality procedures and solutions for identified issues.
  • Inspects service requests to determine the cause of mechanical problems and implements work orders accordingly.
  • Assists in conducting periodic inventory of all tools and equipment assigned to personnel of the trade.
  • Conducts a quarterly inventory of tools and equipment assigned and submits required reports to the foreman by the deadline.
  • Operates and maintains all automotive equipment as outlined in applicable district policies.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the HVAC Mechanic Foreman.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED is required.
  • Associate's Degree in refrigeration is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Two years of experience maintaining commercial kitchen and refrigeration equipment is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge and experience with HVAC, heating, and other mechanical equipment is essential.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles.

Nice-to-haves

  • NC HVAC License/Certification(s) is preferred.
  • Universal EPA Certification is preferred.
