The Instructional Designer 2 works as part of an Instructional Development team and under limited supervision, is responsible for designing and reviewing effective, quality instruction for technology-enabled learning environments.
This position serves in a mentoring role to Instructional Designers 1. In this way, it has some responsibility for leadership within the group.
- - Designs effective, quality instruction for technology-enabled learning environments, including on higher profile, larger, and more complex projects (i.e., projects involving multiple college departments/faculty, projects external to the college, etc.).
- Cultivates close, collaborative and professional working relationships with faculty, content experts (CEs) and other members of the development team.
- Applies systematic instructional design methods in real world, online instructional settings.
- Reviews the instructional quality of courses/products.
- Identifies and clarifies instructional objectives.
- Assesses faculty and content expert teaching style(s) and student audience and applies appropriate learning theory, instructional design theory, and/or technology to instructional situation.
- Questions and influences the practices of faculty and content experts in a course/product in order to enhance instruction.
- Implements innovative approaches and strategies in a course/product to solve instructional problems.
- Selects appropriate technologies, including specific applications, to enhance instruction in a course/product.
- Identifies areas of weakness in courses/products and employs strategies for improvement.
- Uses course/product design documents that are based on sound instructional design principles, and which communicate to stakeholders the vision of a course/product.
- Collaborates with content experts on updates and revisions to courses/products.
- Performs web development tasks using fundamental web development technologies and popular web and eLearning development tools.
- Documents (often via the web) progress/status of assigned tasks for review by others.
- Reports regularly to Project Managers and informs other team members on assignments and progress.
- Provides accurate time and effort estimates on assigned tasks/projects.
- Serves as Instructional Design Lead on projects involving more than one Instructional Designer.
- Mentors Instructional Designers 1 on the fulfillment of their responsibilities.
- Models use of the SLCC Online Learning Model(s) in their own instructional design practices/approaches.
Remains current with and has a thorough understanding of technology tools and trends in online and higher education.
Remains current with learning theory and instructional design theory.

- Facilitates and/or participates in eLearning faculty credentials and other training resources or other events in areas of instructional design and instructional technology tools.
- Designs eLearning faculty credentials and other training resources or other events in areas of instructional design and instructional technology tools.
- Leads internal instructional design subgroups/committees when assigned.
- Reviews work produced by Instructional Designers 1 and provides suggestions for improvement.
Other duties as assigned.
