About the position

The Instructional Designer at UC Santa Barbara will assist in the design and development of online and hybrid courses, collaborating with faculty to enhance digital pedagogy and academic technologies. This role focuses on creating engaging and accessible course content, ensuring quality and compliance, and supporting faculty through consultations and workshops. The position is a full-time, two-year appointment with potential for renewal, emphasizing contributions to diversity and excellence in higher education.

Responsibilities

  • Assist department with instructional design for online and hybrid courses.
  • Collaborate on programs for faculty professional development in digital pedagogy and academic technologies.
  • Support the design of hybrid and online courses and conduct regular checks on course quality and accessibility compliance.
  • Help faculty with assessments and course alignment to improve teacher-student interaction.
  • Curate online materials and resources for campus-wide training on effective teaching in higher education.
  • Develop workshops and host individual and group consultations.
  • Design online and print documentation, tutorials, and video resources in support of instruction.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in any discipline.
  • At least 2 years experience as an instructor in higher education, as a teaching assistant, or in an instructional design position.
  • At least two years of demonstrated expertise in college and university pedagogy and knowledge of research-based teaching and learning principles.
  • At least two years of experience with a range of educational technologies for delivering online learning experiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Instructional Technology/Design or related field.
  • At least 5 years experience as an instructional designer in higher education and/or as a teaching assistant or instructor in higher education.
  • Familiarity with higher education institutions or non-profit organizations.
  • Familiarity with Universal Design for Learning.
  • Experience with ADA compliance.
  • Experience with Quality Matters or similar guidelines.
  • Project management skills.
  • Experience consulting with faculty on educational technology and effective pedagogical practice.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
