About the position

The Instrumentation and Controls Engineer will support water and wastewater projects for an internationally recognized environmental engineering firm. This role involves leading design teams, developing scopes of work, and managing instrumentation and control projects. The position offers a hybrid work schedule, requiring only one day a week in the office, and emphasizes a work-life balance and family-first culture.

Responsibilities

  • Work with project manager and clients
  • Develop scopes of work for I&C systems, networks and projects
  • Lead I&C design teams for medium and large projects
  • Design PLC SCADA networks for medium and large systems
  • Specify industrial fiber optic networks, systems and components
  • Design SCADA network block diagrams
  • Select instrumentation
  • Develop P&IDs
  • Develop control strategies
  • Design control panel layouts
  • Prepare ISA data sheets and instrument sites
  • Develop input/output point lists
  • Review submittals
  • Prepare specifications for instruments, computers, networking equipment, PLCs and associated components
  • Develop preliminary and final construction cost estimates for I&C
  • Meet with clients for design-related workshops, including instrument preferences, HMI graphics design and standard development
  • Design radio telemetry SCADA systems using microwave, spread spectrum, licensed MAS, cellular or other radio technologies
  • Mentor and train Staff Instrumentation Engineers
  • Prepare technical memorandums and reports
  • Manage the instrumentation portion of medium to large sized instrumentation and control projects for water and wastewater treatment facilities
  • Conduct quality management reviews of instrumentation and control designs
  • Participate in continuing editing and development of I&C master specifications
  • Develop project specific specifications for unusual or unique instrumentation applications
  • Prioritize and balance competing project demands and conflicting project requirements
  • Manage other instrumentation and control engineers and CADD technicians to effectively complete work with attention to detail
  • Delegate tasks to others and follow up on completion and quality of work
  • Identify and consult with others on solutions to unusual, difficult, or complex tasks
  • Effectively participate in client contacts and business development efforts
  • Identify alternatives, evaluate each, and determine appropriate actions to move forward
  • Make solid and implementable decisions in a timely manner
  • Reduce complex aspects of instrumentation and control engineering to terms understandable to others
  • Monitor scope, schedule, and budget and control the work to the project plan
  • Make site visits to observe during construction and operation
  • Travel required when requested

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering
  • 6-12 years experience in electrical power and control systems for water, wastewater, and petrochemical facilities
  • Capable of P&ID development, instrumentation selection, control panel layouts, understanding of programmable logic controllers and SCADA HMI software, process control narratives, control system network design, radio telemetry, logic diagrams, control schematics, and assist in field construction and start-up activities
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer or the ability to obtain within 6 months
