About the position

Stantec is seeking a mid to senior level Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to join our team in Walnut Creek, CA. This role is pivotal in our Water business, where we approach water management as a holistic system, ensuring that communities have access to this vital resource. The successful candidate will work alongside a multidisciplinary group of engineers and designers, providing technical services to both public and private sector clients. The primary responsibilities will include control systems engineering, process control strategy planning, automation designs, and construction support services, particularly related to water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations. The Instrumentation and Controls Engineer will be involved in various aspects of project execution, including equipment selection, communication network layouts, and process control design coordination with other engineering disciplines. A strong understanding of PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems is essential, as the engineer will be responsible for planning, designing, programming, and upgrading these systems. Depending on the complexity of the project, the engineer may serve as the project lead or as a team member under the guidance of a principal level engineer. In addition to technical responsibilities, the successful applicant will also engage in marketing support activities, assisting the marketing team with project pursuit strategies, developing presentation materials, and participating in presentations as the I&C discipline subject matter expert. The role will also involve design activities such as developing preliminary scope definitions, budgets, and staffing plans, conducting field reviews, preparing studies and technical memorandums, and developing construction documents including P&IDs, control panel details, and wiring diagrams. The engineer will also provide procurement support by preparing instrument datasheets, reviewing contractor submittals, and providing engineering services during construction, which may include site inspections and support for equipment commissioning and performance testing. Safety is a priority, and the engineer will be expected to adhere to company health and safety guidelines while ensuring the safety of fellow employees.

Responsibilities

  • Control systems engineering for water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations.
  • Process control strategy planning and automation designs.
  • Providing construction support services for public and private sector clients.
  • Conducting field reviews and evaluations of existing equipment and control systems.
  • Preparing studies, conceptual reports, and technical memorandums related to I&C engineering.
  • Developing construction documents including P&IDs, control panel details, and wiring diagrams.
  • Assisting the marketing team with project pursuit strategies and presentation materials.
  • Reviewing and evaluating electrical schematic diagrams and mechanical specifications with controls content.
  • Providing engineering services during construction, including site inspections and support for commissioning.
  • Ensuring personal safety and that of fellow employees by following health and safety guidelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in instrumentation and controls engineering, preferably in water and wastewater sectors.
  • Proficiency in PLC, HMI, and SCADA system design and programming.
  • Experience with control systems engineering and process control strategy planning.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to conduct detailed engineering analyses.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
