About the position

As an Instrumentation Engineering Technician at Cummins, you will play a crucial role in our Engine Operations team located in Columbus, IN. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about technology and engineering, and who are eager to contribute to innovative solutions in the field of instrumentation. Your primary responsibilities will include installing, configuring, calibrating, and repairing instrumentation systems that are vital for our operations. You will be tasked with developing proper instrumentation setups and troubleshooting issues as they arise, ensuring that our systems operate efficiently and effectively. In this role, you will operate, calibrate, install, program, repair, design, and fabricate instrumentation and data acquisition systems. You will maintain data acquisition systems, oversee test cell operations, and manage rig and rig room activities. This includes calibrating, installing, programming, troubleshooting, repairing, and assembling test systems and specialized instrumentation. You will also be responsible for installing, operating, modifying, and troubleshooting PCs and PC networks that are used for instrumentation engineering activities. Your expertise will be essential in evaluating and specifying new equipment, developing new technology, and maintaining electronic engine monitoring systems. You will fabricate and assemble test fixtures and servo-hydraulic systems, operate and troubleshoot hydraulic systems, and calibrate transducers and systems. Additionally, you will maintain parts and equipment inventories, create and maintain electronic documentation, and utilize various general tools such as digital multimeters and soldering irons. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will interface with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other functions. You will coordinate programs, including planning, scheduling, ordering, and tracking, and participate in the maintenance of quality procedures. Your leadership will be vital as you lead and participate in improvement projects and develop presentations for customers and suppliers. Responsibilities

  • Installs, configures, calibrates and repairs instrumentation systems
  • Develops proper instrumentation setup and troubleshoots issues as they occur
  • Operates, calibrates, installs, programs, repairs, designs, and fabricates instrumentation and data acquisition systems
  • Maintains data acquisition systems, test cells operations, rigs and rig rooms; calibrates, installs, programs, troubleshoots, repairs and assembles test systems, general and specialized instrumentation
  • Installs, operates, modifies, and troubleshoots PCs and PC networks used for instrumentation engineering activities
  • Evaluates and specifies new equipment; develops new technology; installs and maintains electronic engine monitoring systems
  • Fabricates and assembles test fixtures and servo-hydraulic systems; operates, troubleshoots, and repairs hydraulic systems, shakers, and rigs; calibrates transducers and systems; installs and calibrates strain gauges and thermocouples (micro)
  • Maintains parts and equipment inventories
  • Creates and maintains electronic documentation
  • Uses a number of general tools including but not limited to digital multimeter, soldering iron, function generator, and frequency generator
  • Reads and interprets electrical wiring diagrams
  • Works with and trains apprentices and technicians
  • Interfaces with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other functions
  • Coordinates programs including planning, scheduling, ordering, and tracking
  • Participates in the maintenance of quality procedures
  • Leads and participates in improvement projects
  • Develops and gives presentations to customers and suppliers
  • Performs other duties as required

Requirements

  • High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience in an appropriate STEM field is required
  • Regionally applicable certification or two year Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study may be required
  • Requires significant relevant experience or specialized skills obtained through education, training, or on the job experience
  • Manages / troubleshoots / repairs electronics for test rigs
  • Building test rigs and production equipment
  • Previous PLC experience
  • Previous Motor Drive experience
  • Previous experience reviewing and debugging code
  • Review SOT data to determine if test plan conditions are met
  • Experience working with low and high voltage electrical systems (5V DC - 480V AC)
  • Electrical Print Design experience
  • Previous experience with maintaining rigs including calibrations and periodic service
