The primary purpose of this role is to provide underwriting and related services for accounts, ensuring that underwriting quality is maintained, proper rating classifications are applied, and targeted loss ratios are achieved for risks associated with liability, property, and workers' compensation coverage. You will be responsible for reviewing contract wording to ensure compliance with insurance coverage requirements, limits, and other necessary provisions. Additionally, you will provide technical advice to colleagues and clients regarding coverage interpretations and policy provisions, acting as a liaison with various departments and external contacts. In this role, you will also participate in and lead key projects that impact underwriting and related departments. You will maintain and update underwriting guidelines and policy manuals for self-insured pools, and perform field activities such as attending client board meetings and conducting educational clinics for pool members or agents. This position requires travel as needed to fulfill these responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide underwriting (property, liability, and/or workers' compensation) and related services to assigned customers within delegated authority.
  • Review contract wording for clients to assess compliance with insurance coverage requirements, limits, and additional insured status.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance regarding coverage interpretations and underwriting acceptability.
  • Act as a liaison with other departments and external contacts, including claims, loss control, and reinsurers.
  • Participate in and lead key projects that impact underwriting and related departments.
  • Maintain and update underwriting guidelines and policy manuals for self-insured pools.
  • Perform field activities such as attending client board meetings and conducting educational clinics for pool members or agents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Property casualty insurance agent license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Six (6) years of property/casualty and/or workers' compensation underwriting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Understanding of the rating methodology of workers' compensation, property, and liability insurance coverage(s).
  • Solid math skills including the ability to calculate figures accurately and efficiently.
  • Analytical and interpretive skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to reason, solve practical problems, and interpret a variety of information and instructions.
  • Ability to lead projects and team initiatives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • PC literate, including Microsoft Office and other system products.

  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation preferred.
  • Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU) designation preferred.
  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designation preferred.
  • Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation preferred.
  • Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designation preferred.
