The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a Chemical Engineer to join the Core Manufacturing (CM) team, which is responsible for the manufacture and delivery of reactor cores to the fleet. This role involves significant responsibility, requiring a balance of cost, schedule, and technical requirements to ensure the delivery of high-quality products that benefit the Government. The CM Fuel and Poison Operations unit manages over $150 million per year in contracted work with external suppliers of nuclear feedstock, fuel, and poison. As a Chemical Engineer, you will develop expertise in manufacturing processes, understand technical requirements, and identify product cost drivers, managing these through contracts. In this position, you will monitor production using key process indicators and track product quality through statistical process control techniques. You will also provide technical and economic engineering evaluations as needed. Depending on your background and interests, you may engage in formal project management, cost estimation, contract negotiation and placement, onsite auditing and surveillance, or the development of new computational tools to achieve unit goals. This role requires effective communication with suppliers, Naval Reactors, and Prime interface organizations, making strong interpersonal skills essential. Candidates must be willing to travel occasionally as part of their responsibilities. The position offers a unique opportunity to solve real-world manufacturing challenges while contributing to the safety and reliability of our nation's naval nuclear reactors and the training of Sailors who operate them.
