About the position

The Itinerant Special Education Teacher at Elkmont Elementary is responsible for creating an educational environment that fosters academic, social, and physical success for special education students. This role involves implementing effective educational programs tailored to the needs of special education students, utilizing designated course materials and best instructional practices. The teacher will serve as an advocate for students, providing support and resources to parents, the community, and the school system. The position requires a commitment to the school system's vision and goals, ensuring that all students receive the necessary support to thrive in their educational journey. The teacher will demonstrate knowledge of child development, particularly the characteristics of special education students, and will be involved in assessing students' needs for transition and related services. Participation in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) is a critical function of this role, including scheduling and attending IEP meetings. The teacher will employ a variety of instructional strategies tailored to the individual needs of students, monitor their participation in regular education programs, and collaborate with other educators to maximize student progress. In addition to instructional responsibilities, the teacher will maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, utilize technology effectively for instruction and communication, and engage in ongoing professional development. The role also includes responsibilities for student supervision during school hours and participation in school improvement initiatives. The teacher will be expected to maintain confidentiality regarding student and school matters and adhere to all relevant policies and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide an educational environment for special education students to succeed academically, socially, and physically.
  • Implement effective educational programs using designated course materials and best practices.
  • Serve as a student advocate and professional resource for parents and the community.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of child development and characteristics of special education students.
  • Assess students' needs for transition and related services.
  • Participate in the development of students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Implement students' IEPs and schedule IEP meetings.
  • Employ a variety of instructional strategies tailored to individual student needs.
  • Monitor student participation in regular education programs and collaborate with regular education teachers.
  • Utilize technology to plan and provide instruction and facilitate student learning.
  • Maintain appropriate student supervision to ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with peers, parents, and administrators to maximize student achievement.
  • Create long-range instructional plans based on curriculum priorities and student IEPs.
  • Select and adapt materials and resources to support learning objectives.
  • Establish behavior management techniques that are effective and appropriate.
  • Organize procedures and practices for effective instructional time management.
  • Use data for diagnosis, instructional planning, and program evaluation.
  • Communicate individual student progress to students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Recognize indicators of student distress or abuse and take appropriate actions.
  • Engage in personal professional growth and demonstrate professional ethics and leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Alabama teaching certificate in special education.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with an emphasis on communication and collaboration.
  • Ability to develop and implement curriculum specific to the needs of assigned students.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology for communication, instruction, and data management.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to assist with student toileting and hygiene needs.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance.
