About the position

The Journeyman Level Mechanical Technician will support the Vacuum Facilities at NASA Glenn Research Center by applying technical knowledge to perform both routine and non-routine mechanical tasks. This role involves troubleshooting, modifying, and repairing test-related hardware and facility devices, ensuring the safe operation of high-temperature fuel systems. The technician will work closely with existing facility technicians and will be required to operate various mechanical tools and equipment, often on rotating shifts and with overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical-related technical effort on test laboratory, facility and/or research hardware and mechanical systems.
  • Assist in the preparation and operation of the laboratory test apparatus or test facilities.
  • Operate facility overhead crane, bucket trucks, man-lifts, forklifts, and portable cranes, providing rigging for lifting equipment and material.
  • Weld using various techniques and materials including stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, copper, and brass.
  • Operate large mechanical tools such as drill presses, power hacksaws, band saws, shears, pipe threaders, brakes, rollers, lathes, and grinders.
  • Lay out and build complex tubing systems using flaring machines and tubing benders.
  • Disassemble, repair, reassemble, and verify various types of valves, valve operators, and pressure regulators.
  • Operate hydraulic systems and high-pressure gas systems including gas tubers and pressure pumps.
  • Work with environmental test chambers, mass spectrometer leak detectors, and vacuum systems.
  • Assist in the installation and operation of intricate research test packages in various test facilities.
  • Fabricate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical control test panels and special test equipment.
  • Perform general maintenance on mechanical vacuum pumping equipment and related systems.
  • Inspect and evaluate mechanical equipment and facility operating systems, making maintenance and repair recommendations.
  • Fabricate, install, and operate cryogenic systems including liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, or liquid helium.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years working experience as a Journeyman Level Mechanic or equivalent vocational training.
  • Completion of a 4-year State approved apprenticeship program with a Journeyman's certificate is highly desired.
  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of research test facilities and associated equipment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from engineering or supervision.
  • Ability to use judgment and decisions to maintain workflow continuity.
  • Self-motivated with good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to organize time and assignments for maximum effectiveness.
