About the position

The Juvenile Detention Center Supervisor position at New Hanover is responsible for overseeing the safety and security of juveniles in a secure facility. This role involves direct supervision of staff and juveniles, ensuring compliance with policies, and managing personnel responsibilities such as hiring, training, and performance management. The position requires working the 3rd shift, including weekends and holidays, and aims to foster a safe environment that promotes healthy decision-making among juveniles.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct supervision to direct care staff responsible for the safety and security of juveniles.
• Supervise pre- and post-adjudicated delinquents and status offenders.
• Assist in the hiring and training of new employees.
• Assign work and manage performance of staff.
• Ensure staff meet certification requirements and comply with policies and procedures.
• Create monthly staff schedules.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and two years of experience working with juvenile/family client population, one year in a secure facility; or an Associate degree and four years of experience, one year in a secure facility; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of institutional programming techniques for delinquent juveniles.
• Experience with establishing rapport with treatment professionals, staff, and juveniles.
• Experience in providing leadership to organize and supervise group activities.

Nice-to-haves

• Working knowledge of principles of administration in operating a secure facility.
• Working knowledge of adolescent behavior and juvenile law.
• Previous managerial experience in supervising multiple staff.
• Experience in training new employees.
