About the position

The Kitchen Staff Substitute position at Opaa! Food Management, Inc. is designed for individuals who can perform essential kitchen functions on an as-needed basis. This role is critical in ensuring that food service operations run smoothly and efficiently, particularly in a school environment. The substitute will assist in various tasks, including food preparation, serving, and maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen and cafeteria areas. The position requires adherence to strict food safety and quality standards, as well as compliance with health regulations. The Kitchen Staff Substitute will be expected to work collaboratively with other kitchen staff and report to the Kitchen Manager, ensuring that all food is prepared and served according to the menu plan and Opaa! recipes. In this role, the individual will assist with the setup of serving lines, ensuring that all food is held at the required temperatures and that milk coolers are stocked and ready for service. The substitute will also be responsible for preparing various food items, including baked goods, and presenting them in an appealing manner. Maintaining a clean and organized work area is essential, as is following proper procedures for inventory management and food safety. The position requires participation in daily operations, including batch cooking and serving food items with proper portion sizes and utensils, while ensuring quality presentation and hospitality. The Kitchen Staff Substitute will also handle administrative tasks such as managing customer transactions, completing necessary paperwork, and maintaining accurate production records. The role involves physical demands, including lifting and moving objects, and requires a commitment to safety and compliance with Opaa!'s policies. Overall, this position is vital for supporting the food service team and ensuring that students receive nutritious meals in a safe and welcoming environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with set-up of serving lines daily and ensure all food is held at the required temperature.
  • Assist in the preparation of foods according to the menu plan and Opaa! recipes.
  • Operate kitchen equipment such as slicers, mixers, and grinders with proper certification.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, including kitchen and cafeteria.
  • Clean kitchen equipment and dishes, and monitor chemical usage in the dishwashing area.
  • Requisition appropriate amounts of food and supplies through the Kitchen Manager.
  • Prepare baked goods as required by the menu plan and present them appealingly to customers.
  • Batch cook to maintain quality product and excellent food presentation.
  • Set up serving lines and ensure food is held at proper temperatures.
  • Serve food items with proper serving sizes and utensils, ensuring quality presentation and hospitality.
  • Keep serving lines stocked with food items, napkins, silverware, and dishes as needed.
  • Prepare foods in compliance with the menu plan and Opaa! recipes, following HACCP processes and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate daily production records per grade group as planned.
  • Participate in safety programs and report unsafe working conditions.
  • Attend required meetings and complete necessary training hours.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred, or up to one month related experience or training.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and correspondence.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence and effectively present information in small group situations.
  • Mathematical skills to perform basic calculations and interpret data.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed instructions.
