About the position

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Virginia is seeking a Lab and Research Technician 2 to join The Saucerman Laboratory. This position is integral to supporting complex biological research focused on cardiac cells and heart failure. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting a variety of experiments involving cardiac cells, which includes tasks such as cell culture, biochemical assays, and microscopy. This role requires a proactive approach to managing laboratory supplies and equipment, ensuring that all items are in good working order to facilitate ongoing research activities. In addition to experimental work, the technician will analyze data using specialized statistical software and compile results for publication. The role also involves assisting with the care and management of small lab animals, including performing specific surgical procedures as needed. A key aspect of this position is the training and supervision of students or volunteers, providing them with guidance on laboratory methods and safety protocols. The technician will support the research team in developing new experimental strategies and techniques, and will coordinate with clinical and research staff on a variety of technical duties. Maintaining detailed records of experiments and results is essential to ensure the integrity and reproducibility of research findings. This position is classified as a restricted role, dependent upon project needs, availability of funding, and performance. It is a non-exempt level position that comes with benefits, and the anticipated hiring range is between $34,000 and $39,000, plus a $1,000 sign-on bonus, based on education and experience.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Education: Associate's degree
  • Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of fundamentals of biochemistry and cell biology.

  • Programming languages including MATLAB.
