About the position

The Lab Support Specialist III - Pathology is responsible for assisting technologists in various laboratory duties, including specimen processing, troubleshooting, and ensuring the cleanliness and proper functioning of laboratory equipment. This full-time position operates Monday to Friday, with potential weekend work, and involves preparing samples for testing, maintaining laboratory standards, and following established protocols to ensure high-quality laboratory services.

Responsibilities

  • Assist technologists in performing laboratory duties including specimen processing and problem-solving.
  • Prepare and weigh samples for testing and analysis.
  • Set up and conduct tests under the direction of a technologist.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment and work areas are clean, sterile, and in proper working order.
  • Troubleshoot problem specimens and communicate outcomes with office and lab staff.
  • Answer phone calls, take messages, and provide necessary information to callers.
  • Ready specimens for placement onto analyzers, ensuring proper labeling.
  • Utilize computer applications to manage specimens and print necessary documentation.
  • Centrifuge specimens after appropriate clotting time and discard aged specimens appropriately.
  • Perform maintenance on instruments under technologist supervision.
  • In the Pathology Department, perform frozen section and prepare slides for testing.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree required; Health Sciences degree preferred.
  • 1-2 years' experience in a laboratory setting and understanding of laboratory equipment.
  • Moderate-High level computer skills required, including proficiency in a Windows-based environment and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
  • Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2-4 years' related work experience preferred.
