About The Position

The Lab Tech Specimen Processing position at Trinity Health Ann Arbor involves working under general supervision to order laboratory tests in the laboratory information system (LIS), handle, process, and prepare patient samples for transportation and distribution to appropriate laboratories for testing. The role requires verifying patient and specimen identification throughout the process. This is a full-time position with a night shift schedule, requiring 40 hours of work per week.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous medical/lab experience preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients and other health care professionals.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when performing job responsibilities.
  • Ability to work and stand for approximately 60% of work time.
  • Organizational skills necessary to prioritize work and flexibility to accommodate task and location reassignment as needed.
  • Familiarity and comfort with using computers.

Responsibilities

  • Determine acceptability of patient specimen (condition, timing, container type, etc.) and consult with Medical Laboratory Scientist when needed.
  • Positively identify specimens against requisitions and appropriately label specimens.
  • Complete specimen handling and processing including centrifugation of vacutainer and aliquoting/pouring over of specimens.
  • Identify discrepancies or missing sources and consult with nursing station or physician as needed.
  • Document and follow up on problems, accessing reference materials and online manuals when needed.
  • Follow test cancellation policy and complete follow-up tasks as needed, locating specimens for add-on testing.
  • Maintain minimum supply levels and cleanliness of workstation and section.
  • Provide input on policies and procedures.
  • Assist in training new employees and students.
  • Review and complete assigned continuing education documents, including annual mandatory education and laboratory procedures review and acknowledgment.
  • Perform and document routine quality control of equipment (centrifuge, refrigerator temperatures) as required by location.
  • Maintain good rapport and cooperative relationships, approaching conflict constructively and participating in problem resolution.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information pertaining to patients, physicians, associates, and visitors, adhering to HIPAA and privacy policies.
  • Behave in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of Trinity Health.
  • Assume responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, reporting all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
