About the position

The Laboratory Technician position at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley involves performing routine laboratory research and administrative duties. The technician will be responsible for conducting laboratory procedures, recording results, managing inventory, and training student researchers, all while ensuring compliance with safety protocols and maintaining a well-organized lab environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares laboratory analyses and reports test results.
  • Collects and processes specimens for analyses including proper handling of paperwork.
  • Evaluates sample results.
  • Prepares, processes and collects samples.
  • Sterilizes lab equipment and lab environment.
  • Disinfects complete samples and lab environment.
  • Keeps inventory and orders lab supplies.
  • Prepares chemical solutions and growth media.
  • Maintains lab equipment and records for the lab.
  • Aids in preparation of manuscripts for publication and poster presentations for scientific conferences.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience with laboratory and/or scientific procedures or eighteen (18) hours of college level Biology and/or chemistry courses.
  • Proficiency in the use of PCs and other standard office equipment.
  • Experience with standard laboratory equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • College level class work in Biology or Chemistry.
  • Basic knowledge of entomology or animal husbandry and bacteriology.
  • Ability to work in laboratory environment (insect rearing facility).
  • Ability to learn and follow laboratory protocols.
  • Completion of USDA trainings in addition to any UTRGV trainings.
