About the position

The Law Clerk position within the Immigration Access Workgroup at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) is a temporary part-time role dedicated to increasing access to justice for vulnerable populations in the Greater Los Angeles area. This position is crucial in assisting undocumented survivors of domestic violence, torture, human trafficking, and other serious abuses in their legal proceedings, particularly in removal proceedings and applications for U.S. citizenship. The Law Clerk will work closely with attorneys and clients, providing essential support in navigating the complexities of immigration law and ensuring that clients receive the legal assistance they need to regain control of their lives. The Law Clerk will be based at the East Los Angeles Community Office and will be expected to perform various duties, including client intake and screening, gathering information for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services forms, and assisting with naturalization workshops. This role requires attention to detail and dependability, as the Law Clerk will be responsible for preparing applications and declarations under attorney supervision, updating file docket sheets, and occasionally traveling to other LAFLA offices for client interviews. The position also involves contributing to the organization's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, promoting an inclusive environment for all clients and staff. LAFLA is a nonprofit law firm with a long-standing commitment to serving the most underserved communities in Los Angeles. With over 200 employees, including more than 100 attorneys, LAFLA provides free legal services on a wide range of civil legal issues. Responsibilities

  • Client intake and screening
  • Gather information needed to complete U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services forms
  • Assist with naturalization workshops as needed
  • Provide support to Naturalization Project by scanning/uploading documents into client files
  • Contact clients to confirm upcoming appointments for biometrics, interviews and oath ceremonies
  • Prepare applications and Declarations under attorney supervision for immigration matters involving Naturalization, VAWA, T and U-Visa forms of relief
  • Update file docket sheets
  • Occasional travel to other LAFLA offices to conduct client interviews
  • Contribute to the organization's DEI plan and goals supporting all DEI initiatives

Requirements

  • Position open to law students/grads, paralegals, paralegal students and undergraduates
  • Spanish or Khmer language skills highly preferred, but not required
  • Attention to detail and dependable
  • Experience or interest in working with immigrants
  • Prior experience completing U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services forms a plus

Nice-to-haves

  • Capacity in any other second language may be a plus in assisting persons from other language groups
