About the position

Parsons is seeking a highly skilled Senior Fire Protection Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for supporting a variety of projects across industrial, commercial, transportation, and water sectors. This position is hybrid, ideally suited for candidates residing near Charlotte, NC, or within the Eastern Standard Time zone. As a Senior Fire Protection Engineer, you will plan, direct, and oversee engineering activities, ensuring successful project execution. Your expertise will be crucial in conducting fire protection engineering inspections, studies, designs, and complex calculations. You will also perform site surveys to identify code issues and provide compliant solutions, interpreting and applying local, state, and federal regulations related to fire protection and life safety. In addition to technical responsibilities, you will prepare and present technical audits, reports, and exhibits, design fire suppression and alarm systems, and create technical specifications. The role requires the ability to multi-task, work independently with minimal supervision, and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills. Occasional visits to construction sites may be necessary, which could involve travel with overnight stays, estimated at 10-40% per year. You will also mentor junior staff and review/create Architectural Life Safety Code Analysis, requiring specific knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC) and NFPA 101. Your responsibilities will include reviewing fire protection submittals for code compliance and extracting engineering information from CAD drawings, as well as preparing engineering computations, material quantity takeoffs, estimates, surveys, and designs. You may be required to provide the seal and signature of a professional engineer, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and regulations. This role may also involve acting in an advisory capacity to senior management on engineering-related matters, along with other responsibilities as appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, and oversee engineering activities including project execution.
  • Conduct Fire Protection Engineering inspections, studies, design, and complex calculations.
  • Complete site surveys to identify code issues and offer compliant solutions.
  • Interpret and apply local, state, and federal requirements and regulations related to fire protection and life safety.
  • Prepare and present technical audits, reports, and exhibits.
  • Design fire suppression systems and fire alarm systems, and prepare technical specifications.
  • Multi-task and work with minimal supervision, following written and oral instructions.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Conduct occasional visits to construction sites for commissioning witness and As Built Verification/Generation, which may require travel with overnight stays.
  • Carry out and review fire engineering calculations including smoke exhaust and evacuation analysis with minimal support.
  • Mentor junior staff in fire protection engineering practices.
  • Review/Create Architectural Life Safety Code Analysis, requiring knowledge of IBC and NFPA 101.
  • Review fire protection submittals for code compliance prior to submission to the AHJ for permitting.
  • Extract engineering information from CAD drawings and prepare engineering computations, material quantity takeoffs, estimates, surveys, and designs.
  • Review supplier drawing submittals and perform technical bid analyses.
  • Provide the seal and signature of the professional engineer as appropriate, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Act in an advisory capacity to senior management personnel on engineering-related matters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Typically 8+ years of related work experience.
  • Professional Engineer registration is required.
  • Possess certifications, training, and working knowledge of all ICC and NFPA codes and standards including NFPA 13, 14, 11, 15, 16, 20, 22, 24, 25, 2001, 70, and 72.
  • Experience in using Hydraulic Calculation software such as HASS or AutoSPRINK.
  • US citizenship is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to design fire alarm, fire suppression, and life safety systems using Revit is preferred.
