About The Position

The Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 1, Central Washington National Wildlife Refuge Complex, is filling one Lead Wildland Firefighter, GS-0456-8 permanent full-time position at Othello, WA. This position comes with a supplemental pay increase of $20,000 or 50% of base pay per year, authorized under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and continuing resolutions. The job is open for applications from January 17, 2025, to January 30, 2025.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Suitability for employment, as determined by background investigation.
  • Must pass a drug test.
  • Must meet medical requirements.
  • Must wear the official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform.
  • Must meet the minimum/maximum age requirement (must be under 37 years old at the time of application).
  • Prior experience in wildland firefighting is required.
  • Must provide documentation verifying qualifications for the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in leading firefighting crews.
  • Knowledge of fire behavior, topography, and weather conditions.
  • Certification in NWCG Incident Management Qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead three or more regularly assigned firefighters and provide situational leadership for additional firefighters based on the fire assignment.
  • Oversee wildland fire module or crew in fuels management, fire suppression, monitoring, and post-fire activities.
  • Mentor and instruct lower graded employees on crewmember duties.
  • Plan action and direct utilization of fireline resources on less complex fires.
  • Direct assigned suppression operations and recommend and implement tactical strategy on attacking, controlling, or mopping up fires.
  • Operate, move, inspect, and perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Drive and operate a wildland fire engine, ensuring adequate supply of water and chemical agents.
  • Identify lookout locations and assign lookout.
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct helicopter operations in support of mission requests.
  • Direct moderately complex fuels management projects or participate in more complex projects.
