The University of California, Berkeley is seeking to generate an applicant pool of qualified temporary instructors for the Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering departments. These positions are primarily focused on teaching responsibilities, which include lecturing, laboratory instruction, holding regular office hours, assigning grades, advising students, and preparing course materials and exams. The anticipated start date for these positions is during the 2024-25 academic year, with specific start dates for the Fall and Spring semesters. The positions can be for one semester or for the entire academic year, depending on departmental needs and the availability of openings. In addition to the standard teaching responsibilities, applicants may also be considered for Teacher Special Programs (TSP). TSP instructors will oversee capstone projects in the Master of Engineering (MEng) program, which involves designing and proposing capstone projects, matching students to suitable projects, and meeting regularly with project teams to review progress and provide feedback. This role requires a commitment to maintaining efficient progress and providing critical feedback on students' written reports and oral presentations. The pool encompasses specializations relevant to both mechanical and aerospace engineering, and while applicants are considered as needs arise, being in the pool does not guarantee a position will be available. The application process includes submitting a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a statement on contributions to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Candidates must have a Master's degree at the time of application, with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree required by the start of the appointment, along with at least one year of teaching experience at the graduate level. Teaching experience in undergraduate or graduate courses is preferred. The University of California, Berkeley is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, and successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge and skills related to equity and inclusion in their academic roles.
