About the position

The City of Charlottesville is seeking a highly motivated Public Communications Specialist for the Central Library, who embodies the core values of Commitment, Respect, Innovation, and Collaboration. This full-time, non-exempt position is responsible for promoting the educational services offered by the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. The specialist will work closely with the Library Director to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive marketing and public relations plans. This role involves creating and disseminating press releases, newsletters, advertisements, and other public information materials to enhance the library's visibility and engagement with the community. In addition to traditional media outreach, the Public Communications Specialist will be tasked with promoting the library's digital presence, ensuring that the library's webpages are user-friendly and informative. The position also requires the creation of visually appealing public relations materials, including flyers, brochures, bookmarks, and handouts, while maintaining consistent visual standards across all library locations. The specialist will be responsible for maintaining communication with local media representatives, scheduling staff appearances on television and radio, and liaising with both internal and external clients to plan events and media coverage. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to public service and the ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms. This position may require occasional evening and weekend hours to meet deadlines, and the specialist will be expected to take official library photographs and write columns for local newspapers. Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains the library's public relations plan
  • Maintains the library's style manual
  • Produces outreach content using various communication tools (multimedia, online) in support of the library's mission
  • Creates press releases, newsletters, flyers, and other public information materials
  • Writes columns for weekly and monthly newspapers
  • Maintains communication with local media representatives (newspaper, radio, TV, web)
  • Ensures consistency of all public communication materials throughout the regional library
  • Takes official library photographs
  • Schedules staff appearances on TV and radio
  • Liaises with internal and external clients for planning events and media coverage

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in media, marketing, communications, or equivalent
  • Three years of experience as a publicist or graphic designer
  • Considerable writing, editing, content design, and desktop publishing skills
  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, and most Microsoft software
  • Superior ability in developing graphics, posters, bookmarks, flyers, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form
  • Strong commitment to public service
  • Ability to create online communications that meet ADA accessibility guidelines
  • Proficiency in communicating through Facebook, Twitter, and other social media
