About The Position

Join our Aquatics Team to ensure everyone can enjoy the pool in a safe and welcoming environment. Whether you’re a lifeguard, a swim instructor, or a little bit of both, you’re going to love working in aquatics at the Y because you’re helping swimmers feel confident and gain experience in the water. No lifeguard experience? No problem, we’ll train you! The position involves providing for the welfare and safety of all participants in and around the swimming pool.

Requirements

  • Must be certified in PR/CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid (Training provided by the Y, if needed).
  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • YMCA Lifeguard or certification by another nationally recognized organization.
  • Possess a cooperative spirit to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Ability to relate with pool patrons in a positive manner.
  • Professional, alert, courteous, and tactful.
  • Serious in manner toward job responsibilities and have an aptitude for thinking clearly in emergency situations.
  • Strong water skills and maintain top physical fitness.

Responsibilities

  • Stay current in CPRPR/AED/O2 and First Aid, renewed annually.
  • Complete Bloodborne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire and renewed annually.
  • Remain mentally alert to dangerous situations to assure safety of all swimmers.
  • Move with the use of both arms and legs and properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200-pound person.
  • Read, write, and do basic math.
  • Remain alert in humid and hot conditions.
  • Move to various locations, including in and around the swimming pool and an elevated lifeguard station.
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances.
  • Handle irate, complaining individuals without internalizing or personalizing comments made.
  • Demonstrate and perform rescue and lifesaving skills.
  • Rescue and provide emergency care for any accident victim in and about the pool and record such incidents on report forms.
  • Prevent accidents by encouraging situations that are within guideline of established safety procedures.
  • Maintain skills necessary for preventive lifeguarding, water rescues, CPR, First Aid, dry land accident care.
  • Attend monthly in-service training.
  • Abide by the Y policies and pool rules and all state, county and city health codes applicable to swimming pools.
  • Be on duty ten minutes and on deck five minutes prior to work assignments and keep track of work hours on a time sheet.
  • Find a qualified substitute if needed, with clearance from the Aquatic Director or Aquatic Coordinator.
  • Follow prescribed daily pool maintenance duties, including pool attendance.
  • Lock and secure all pool doors when the pool is closed.
  • Attend all required training or certification events.
  • Walk the deck during guard assignments or sit for no more than five minutes at a time.
  • Project an aura of authority while maintaining a positive image by showing genuine concern for pool users.
  • Wear rescue equipment, staff uniform, and whistle while on duty.
  • Notify supervisor of any broken or unsafe equipment and take it out of service until repairs are made.
  • Report specific problems or needs to the Aquatic Director.
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the Aquatic Director for reaching Corporate goals within the purpose and mission of the Y.
  • Develop meaningful and sustainable relationships with members, donors, and volunteers.
