The Lifeguard position at the Y in Central Maryland is a vital role that ensures the safety and well-being of all individuals using the swimming pool facilities. Under the supervision of the Swim Director or another assigned associate, the Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining a safe and clean environment during operating hours. This includes safeguarding the health and safety of members, class participants, and guests, as well as enforcing guidelines and safety policies. Lifeguards are expected to report to work in uniform at least ten minutes before their shift to receive necessary communications and instructions. Regular in-service training is mandatory to ensure that all lifeguards are up-to-date with safety protocols and procedures. The Lifeguard will be responsible for monitoring the safety of all swimmers, interpreting and enforcing pool rules, and conducting chemical readings of pool conditions according to bathing codes. They must adjust the pool conditions as necessary and maintain the upkeep of the pool area and equipment, notifying supervisors of any needed repairs or adjustments. Lifeguards are also expected to prepare the program/service area with necessary equipment and ensure that all equipment is returned to proper storage after use. Engaging with participants, promoting a professional image, and maintaining a clean and safe environment are essential functions of this role. Lifeguards must also embody the four character values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility, and adhere to the YCM Code of Conduct. Additionally, they are expected to communicate the Y mission and objectives to the community and assist in other areas as assigned.
