About the position

The Lifeguard position at the City of Springfield is a seasonal role focused on ensuring the safety of patrons at aquatic facilities. The primary responsibility of the lifeguard is to prevent and respond to emergencies effectively, maintaining a safe environment for all users of the facility. Lifeguards are expected to enforce all aquatic rules, policies, and regulations, ensuring compliance from all patrons. This role requires vigilance and a proactive approach to safety, as well as the ability to react swiftly and appropriately in emergency situations. In addition to emergency response, lifeguards are responsible for inspecting the facility before opening and after closing to identify and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to their supervisor. They must complete all necessary paperwork during their shifts, which may include incident reports and attendance logs. Regular participation in in-service training sessions is also required to keep skills sharp and stay updated on best practices in lifeguarding. Lifeguards will also be responsible for signing in all bathers using the facility and maintaining cleanliness by picking up trash in and around the pool area. This role not only requires physical fitness and swimming proficiency but also strong leadership and public relations skills to interact positively with patrons and ensure a welcoming environment.

Responsibilities

  • Recognize emergencies and respond to them effectively

  • Participate in regular in-service training sessions
  • Sign-in all bathers using the facility

Requirements

  • Current certification in American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Training/First Aid
  • Current certification in American Red Cross or American Heart CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding certification if working at 5-Mile Pond
  • Thorough knowledge of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques
  • Understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures
  • Leadership and public relation skills
  • Decision making skills
