About the position

Quantum Research International, Inc. (Quantum) is seeking a Linux System Administrator to support the Compute Architecture Operation Center (CAOC) in Huntsville, AL. The role involves performing standard Linux system administration duties to ensure the smooth operation of multi-user computer systems, which include Linux-based application and license servers, virtual machines, and shared services. The selected candidate will work closely with network and storage administrators to coordinate efforts and maintain system integrity. The responsibilities of the Linux System Administrator include setting up administrator and service accounts, maintaining system documentation, tuning system performance, and installing system-wide software. The administrator will also be responsible for allocating mass storage space and developing policies and standards for the allocation of computing resources. Participation in the installation, integration, acceptance testing, and ongoing maintenance of systems and software environments is also required. In addition, the Linux System Administrator will assist in forecasting resource limitations and provide recommendations for increasing efficiency through proper scheduling and load balancing techniques. The role will also involve supporting and developing automation to streamline and standardize deployment and maintenance tasks, including building and maintaining an automation framework using tools like Ansible. The candidate will be expected to develop knowledge to maintain and administer container-based solutions as well.

Responsibilities

  • Perform standard Linux System Administration duties to maintain smooth operation of multi-user computer systems.
  • Set up administrator and service accounts, maintain system documentation, and tune system performance.
  • Install system-wide software and allocate mass storage space.
  • Develop and monitor policies and standards for allocation related to the use of computing resources.
  • Participate in the installation, integration, acceptance testing, and ongoing maintenance of systems and software environment.
  • Assist with forecasting resource limitations and provide recommendations for increasing efficiency through proper scheduling and load balancing techniques.
  • Support and develop automation to streamline and standardize deployment and maintenance tasks.
  • Build and maintain automation framework to support overall system, including customer onboarding/offboarding, standard maintenance/patching, and user/account administration using Ansible.
  • Develop knowledge to maintain and administer container-based solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of experience (additional experience may be substituted for the degree).
  • DoD 8570 certification - Security + and OS cert, Linux+, RedHat, etc. (90 day waiver may be provided to obtain the OS certification).
  • Willingness to occasionally work after hours and/or respond to emergency situations for problem resolution.
  • General knowledge of Linux and general Unix operating systems concepts as well as systems administration experience.
  • Ability to develop and maintain documentation on system administration procedures for routine and complex tasks.
  • Ability to create and maintain Information Assurance (IA) compliance documentation of the Information System.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with compiling, installing, and porting software.
  • Experience with storage devices and NFS storage protocol.
  • Familiarity with multi-factor authentication platforms and solutions, and Identity Management such as OpenID, LDAP, and Kerberos.
  • Security implementations using multi-factor authentication, PKI, or Kerberos and Unix OS hardening to DoD STIG standards.
  • Experience programming or troubleshooting Python code.
  • Experience with supporting Apache Web Server.
  • Experience with Ubuntu and Red Hat Enterprise Linux distros.
  • Experience with Red Hat Satellite or Red Hat Identity Manager.
  • Experience with BIND DNS.
