About the position

Abacus Solutions Group is seeking a Linux System Administrator to join our team at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA. This position is integral to our mission of providing IT Operations and Support to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Agency, which trains law enforcement professionals from over 90 different agencies. As a Linux System Administrator, you will work alongside a diverse team of Help Desk Specialists, Network Engineers, System Administrators, and Database Professionals, all dedicated to making a difference in the lives of those we serve. In this role, you will be responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of various Linux environments, including RHEL Versions 8 and 9, CentOS, and Ubuntu. You will also manage web servers using Apache and Nginx, ensuring that both internal and customer systems are backed up and secure. Your expertise will be crucial in designing and executing disaster recovery scenarios for enterprise applications, as well as proactively managing and monitoring server performance, system logs, storage, network activities, and security components to maintain optimal uptime and performance. Additionally, you will perform Linux server hardening and firewall configuration in accordance with Federal regulations, utilizing Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs). Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues will be a key part of your responsibilities, as will the use of scripting languages such as Bash, Shell, Perl, and Python, along with automation tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef. You will continuously improve automation scripting and processes to enhance efficiency and reduce manual intervention, while also training and supporting the next generation of system administrators. Other job duties may be assigned as required.

Responsibilities

  • Installation, configuration, and maintenance of Linux environments including RHEL Versions 8 and 9, CentOS, and Ubuntu.
  • Management of web servers using Apache and Nginx.
  • Create backups for internal and customer systems.
  • Design and execute disaster recovery scenarios for enterprise applications.
  • Proactively manage and monitor servers' performance, system logs, storage, network activities, and security components for optimal uptime and performance.
  • Perform Linux Server hardening and firewall configuration including Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) in accordance with Federal regulations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
  • Utilize scripting languages like Bash, Shell, Perl, Python as well as tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef to develop and implement automation and toolsets for system administration, configuration management, and deployment automation.
  • Continuously improve automation scripting and processes to enhance efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
  • Train and support the next generation of system administrators.
  • Perform other job duties as required/assigned.

Requirements

  • 4 years of experience working as a Linux System Administrator specifically with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and CentOS.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and analytical abilities.
  • Experience with security hardening practices and applying STIGs.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices from a system administration perspective.
  • Experience with automation tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef) and scripting languages (Bash, Shell, Perl, Python).
  • Proven ability to design and administer systems based on project and client requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills using the English language.
  • Bachelor's Degree with an emphasis on Information Technology; Experience may be considered in lieu of the Degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prefer candidates with a Linux Certification such as: CompTIA Linux+, RHCSA, RHCE or LPIC-2 (or greater).
