About the position

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking a Limited Term Employee (LTE) to serve as the Shooting Range Facility Manager in Fitchburg, WI. This role is crucial in supporting the Division of Public Safety and Resource Protection's recreational safety programs. The primary responsibility of the LTE Shooting Range Facility Manager is to assist in the implementation and maintenance of state-owned shooting ranges within the south-central region of Wisconsin. The position requires a commitment to ensuring that all visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience while utilizing the shooting ranges. The successful candidate will work closely with the DNR Shooting Range Program Specialist to monitor compliance with range regulations and provide excellent customer service to the public. The position is structured around a typical workweek of Monday through Friday, but it will also require regular weekend and evening work throughout the year. The LTE Shooting Range Facility Manager will be responsible for implementing shooting range program policies, procedures, and guidelines, ensuring that safety protocols are communicated effectively. This includes addressing and resolving complaints related to range operations and promoting educational programs to encourage participation in hunting and shooting sports. In addition to program implementation, the role involves performing general maintenance tasks such as snow removal, target replacement, and conducting physical inspections of the ranges. The manager will also be responsible for recruiting, training, and managing volunteers to assist with these tasks. Furthermore, the position includes developing and managing annual budgets for the shooting ranges and scheduling capital improvement projects, which may involve working with outside contractors to obtain necessary permits and approvals.

Responsibilities

  • Implement shooting range program policies, procedures, and guidelines for the regional shooting ranges.
  • Ensure that range safety guidelines are clearly communicated and followed.
  • Investigate and resolve complaints about range operations and the customer experience.
  • Identify and promote recreational shooting opportunities and educational programs.
  • Perform general maintenance, upkeep, snow removal, and target replacement on state-owned ranges.
  • Conduct periodic physical inspections of the ranges.
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers to perform maintenance tasks.
  • Perform target range inspections and submit reports on range activity and use.
  • Develop and implement annual budgets for the operation and management of the shooting ranges.
  • Schedule capital improvement projects and assist in obtaining necessary permits and approvals.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and eligibility to drive a state vehicle.
  • Minimum of two years of licensed driving experience.
  • General knowledge of hunting and shooting sports, including conservation roles.
  • General knowledge of firearms, ammunition, and safety standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for professional interaction with Department staff and constituents.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of NR45 rules and shooting range policy and procedures.
  • Experience as a shooter with involvement in target shooting, training, and range supervision.
  • Knowledge of light maintenance of firearms and shooting range infrastructure.
