About the position

The Machine Shop Programmer at Westinghouse Electric Co is a pivotal role that involves developing and implementing machine programs for large CNC machines on the manufacturing floor. This position requires a deep understanding of machining processes and the ability to collaborate effectively with both engineering teams and machinists. The programmer will lead efforts in creating processes and tooling necessary for complex machining activities, ensuring that all fixturing and tool paths are accurately developed and implemented. This role is not only technical but also involves mentoring less experienced programming personnel, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and efficiency within the programming team. In this role, the programmer will be responsible for the development and installation of machining programs tailored for CNC machining centers. This includes the procurement of necessary tooling to support each program and the creation of tooling lists aimed at maximizing process efficiency. A thorough knowledge of machining center capabilities is essential, as the programmer will need to select the appropriate machine assignments to minimize costs while balancing setup and run times. The programmer will also work closely with schedulers and planners to ensure effective scheduling and tracking of machine usage. The successful candidate will be recognized as a subject matter expert in programming functions across various machine styles at the plant. This expertise will enable them to communicate complex technical concepts effectively with both machine shop personnel and engineering teams. Additionally, the programmer will lead and mentor junior CNC programmers, recommending necessary training and new processes or technologies that can drive improvements in efficiency. Continuous improvement of machining process times will be a key focus, utilizing lessons learned from previous jobs to enhance future performance.
