The Machinist Set Up Operator at Modern Machining Solutions is responsible for setting up and operating NC and CNC machines, as well as conventional machines within the Casting Cells. This role involves performing a variety of machining operations including turning, drilling, tapping, boring, reaming, threading, forming, facing, milling, slotting, grooving, chamfering, serrating, and deburring to produce explosion-proof parts from various materials. The operator will be expected to maintain high standards of quality and precision throughout the machining process. In this position, the operator will refer to assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, and machining blueprints to ensure that tolerances are maintained. The role requires setting controls and performing manual data input functions as necessary, reviewing operation data sheets, parts programs, tape readouts, and prints. The operator will also be responsible for changing collets and/or chucks, loading and unloading parts, and adjusting tools as needed. Quality control is a critical aspect of this role, as the operator will check the first piece using fixed or adjustable gauges and will gauge periodically to visually inspect all parts for appearance and compliance with specifications, correcting any discrepancies as they arise. Additionally, the operator will maintain a supply of materials to the machines and remove finished work to ensure a smooth workflow through the cells. Fork truck operation is also a part of the job, as the operator may need to facilitate their own work or move materials around the department as required. Maintaining a clean, neat, and orderly work area, as well as following 5-S principles, is essential to this role.
