The Machinist: Wood Products Technician position at Oregon State University (OSU) is a full-time role within the TallWood Design Institute, focusing on applied research, technical testing, and educational activities related to timber building systems. The technician will operate advanced CNC and robotic milling equipment, contribute to the fabrication of wood testing samples, and maintain a safe and organized work environment in a state-of-the-art lab.

  • Perform machining of wood products using CNC and robotic milling equipment.
  • Contribute to the manufacture of large wood testing samples and prototypes.
  • Construct testing structures and perform material handling.
  • Read, interpret, and produce 2D and 3D plans using CAD software.
  • Program CNC milling machines and robotic equipment using CAM programs.
  • Collaborate with TDI staff, researchers, and students on fabrication projects.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot fabrication and structural testing equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe working environment and keeping areas organized.
  • Provide direction to lab users and monitor technical tasks.
  • Skill in using woodworking tools and equipment such as table saws and drills.
  • Experience in programming and maintaining CNC milling machines.
  • Demonstrated ability in CAD and CAM software for producing shop drawings and machining programs.
  • Basic woodworking skills and experience with hand tools and measuring equipment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and plan fabrication methods.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with mass timber machining using Biesse Uniteam CNCs.
  • Experience with Kuka or other industrial robots.
  • Familiarity with MasterCam and Robotmaster software packages.
  • Experience in a construction or fabrication shop environment.
  • Rigging and overhead crane operation experience with certification.
  • Understanding of hydraulic systems operation.
