About the position

The Special Education Resource Teacher at Maili Elementary will be responsible for providing specially designed instruction and classroom supports tailored to meet the unique needs of special education students. This role is crucial in ensuring that students with disabilities receive the appropriate educational services and support necessary for their academic success. The teacher will work collaboratively with general education teachers, parents, and other professionals to create an inclusive learning environment that fosters the growth and development of all students. In addition to direct instruction, the Special Education Resource Teacher will assess students' needs, develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and monitor student progress. The teacher will also provide guidance and support to staff regarding best practices in special education and will be involved in training and professional development activities. The position requires a commitment to ongoing professional growth and adherence to the standards set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for teaching and a strong understanding of special education laws and practices. They will be expected to maintain a positive and supportive classroom environment, implement effective teaching strategies, and engage students in meaningful learning experiences. This position is a full-time role within the Hawaii Department of Education, and the successful candidate will be expected to fulfill all responsibilities associated with the teaching position, including participation in school activities and meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specially designed instruction to special education students.
  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
  • Assess students' needs and monitor their progress regularly.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to create an inclusive learning environment.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff on best practices in special education.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training activities.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress and needs.
  • Participate in school activities and meetings as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or a related field.
  • Valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit upon hire.
  • Completion of a Teacher's Education Program within 3 years if hired without one.
  • Demonstrated commitment to meeting Hawaii licensing requirements as set by the HTSB.
  • Strong understanding of special education laws and practices.
