About The Position

The position involves assisting the Supervisor of Warehouse & Distribution/Vehicle Operations in the efficient operation of vehicle operation services. The primary goal is to keep the District's vehicles operational, including buses, vans, trucks, cars, tractors, mowers, heavy equipment, and small engines, to minimize problems or interruptions to the education program.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Completion of a course of study in automotive mechanics and a minimum of five years experience as an automotive mechanic.
  • Three years experience as a heavy truck mechanic is preferred.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain appropriate ASE certifications.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Freon license.
  • Knowledge of national, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of parts, equipment, fluids, tools, techniques, and terminology in automotive and heavy equipment mechanics.
  • Skill in operating front-end repair equipment and shop-testing equipment.
  • Experience in diesel engine repair, small engine repair, hydraulic systems, body repair, fabrication, and welding repair.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and work order management software.
  • Ability to supervise and engage personnel in multiple work assignments.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and make decisions with limited data.
  • Ability to read and apply technical information from manuals and publications.
  • Valid Kansas Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) and a good driving record.
  • Ability to work in varied weather and temperature conditions.
  • Ability to work from heights and in confined areas.
  • Ability to perform work independently with minimal supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge of methods and techniques for lubricating automobile and equipment parts.
  • Ability to modify components to meet job requirements.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Supervisor of Warehouse & Distribution/Vehicle Operations to receive daily assignments.
  • Plan, schedule, coordinate, and oversee the workflow of department personnel in performing minor mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs on various vehicles.
  • Estimate time, material, and labor costs for work carried out by department personnel and contracted work.
  • Research and run reports for Auto Shop related to daily operations.
  • Ensure timely and courteous responses to work requests by department personnel.
  • Assign and oversee a variety of work assignments including engine repairs, brake repairs, and maintenance of various vehicles.
  • Direct and assist department personnel in diagnosing and repairing vehicles and equipment.
  • Inspect and prepare all vehicles that transport students for highway patrol inspections.
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records for all vehicles.
  • Direct and assist department personnel with preventive maintenance programs.
  • Attend training sessions and meetings for professional development.
  • Ensure safety and efficiency in task completion by department personnel.
  • Operate District vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and complete repair order forms.
  • Obtain and maintain qualifications as a school bus driver and be available as a substitute driver.
  • Assist other maintenance areas with work requests as assigned.
