About the position

Garner's mission is to transform the healthcare economy, delivering high quality and affordable care for all. By helping employers restructure their healthcare benefit to provide clear incentives and data-driven insights, we direct employees to higher quality and lower cost healthcare providers. The result is that patients get better health outcomes while doctors are rewarded for practicing well, not performing more procedures. We are backed by top-tier venture capital firms, are growing rapidly and looking to expand our team. We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join and lead the team responsible for the systems that generate Garner's national healthcare provider rankings. The ideal candidate for this role should have a high sense of ownership, be comfortable mentoring engineers of all levels, have experience with distributed systems, and be able to reliably deliver complex technical solutions. This role reports to the VP of Health Intelligence Engineering. This is a hybrid role and will require up to 3 days most weeks in Garner's New York City office.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical oversight and drive new features with a focus on Garner's strategic mission
  • Build a high-performance team by mentoring, providing feedback, and hiring
  • Continuously strive for quality while maintaining speed of delivery
  • Balance between greenfield features and scaling existing systems
  • Collaborate across disciplines by identifying bottlenecks and risks, proposing mitigation, and communicating tradeoffs
  • Protect our users' privacy and security through best practices

Requirements

  • 7+ years of hands-on engineering experience, with a focus on big data and distributed systems
  • 3+ years experience as an engineering leader with a track record of translating ambiguous business requirements into scalable solutions and new product features
  • Expertise with batch data processing frameworks such as Hadoop, Spark, EMR, etc.
  • Expertise with big data technologies such as Argo, Apache iceberg, AWS glue, Spark, Metaflow, DBT, and Soda
  • Strong leadership skills with an ability to inspire, motivate, mentor, and retain top engineering talent
  • Proven ability to influence without authority (e.g. driving process improvements, spearheading architecture enhancements, etc.)
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP)
  • Familiarity with healthcare data standards (e.g. HIPAA, EDI) is highly desirable
  • Strong sense of ownership and proactive problem-solving mindset
  • A willingness to 'roll up your sleeves' and do whatever is necessary to ensure company success
  • Experience working in a rapidly evolving startup environment
  • A desire to be a part of our mission to improve the U.S. healthcare system
