About the position

As a dedicated Manager, Risk Management at USAA, you will play a crucial role in the development and mentoring of a high-performing team that supports the enhancement and growth of the USAA risk management program. This position is pivotal in influencing processes at both the business unit and enterprise level, leading and setting the agenda for risk management deliverables. You will be responsible for providing comprehensive risk management support for a line of business or staff agency, focusing on key risk identification, measurement, monitoring, control, and reporting. Your expertise will be essential in understanding and managing risk through appropriate practices and processes, ensuring that exposures are maintained at acceptable levels. In this role, you will monitor the risk and control environment, providing effective challenges to both internal and external stakeholders. You will lead cross-functional teams and collaborate with control partners to achieve objectives across multiple business units or Centers of Excellence. Additionally, you will participate in and support internal and external audits, regulatory reviews, and rating agency requests. The position requires a flexible work environment, with an expectation to be in the office four days a week, and can be based in various locations including San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, Charlotte, NC, or Tampa, FL. Your responsibilities will include directing staff and initiatives that support risk management programs, advising management on process changes, and building a high-performing team of risk professionals through recruitment, training, coaching, and performance management. You will partner with key stakeholders to oversee the identification, assessment, and documentation of risks and controls, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and regulatory requirements. Furthermore, you will provide counsel to business unit managers on risk management issues and support the evaluation of new product strategies on their impact to USAA's risk profile. Your role will also involve educating risk owners on best practices and managing processes for collecting accurate internal loss data from business areas.

Responsibilities

  • Direct staff and initiatives that support risk management programs, including governance support and risk oversight.
  • Build and manage a high-performing team of risk professionals through recruitment, training, coaching, and performance management.
  • Partner with key stakeholders to identify, assess, and document risks and controls.
  • Review and recommend the development of risk policies and procedures in partnership with leadership.
  • Provide counsel to business unit managers on risk management issues and evaluate new product strategies.
  • Educate risk owners on risk management best practices and collaborate with other risk functions.
  • Manage processes for collecting accurate internal loss data from business areas.
  • Direct analysis and data mining initiatives to identify and manage emerging risk exposures.
  • Establish and monitor key performance and risk indicators to identify risk trends.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business, Finance, or a relevant field, or 4 additional years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 6 years of risk management, regulatory, or operations experience in banking, insurance, financial services, audit, or public accounting.
  • 2 years of direct team lead, supervisory, or management experience.
  • Risk management experience in a complex institution or highly matrixed environment related to banking, insurance, or financial services.
  • Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution management and ability to influence business outcomes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and knowledge of data analysis tools and techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Excel and PowerPoint.

Nice-to-haves

  • 4-6 years of direct team lead, supervisory, or management experience.
  • 3-6 years of Issues Management experience, including Mitigation and Remediation activities.
  • Knowledge of federal laws and regulations related to REG E and REG Z.
  • Experience in project management.
