About the position

Dexter is the premier manufacturer and supplier of axles, suspension, brakes, doors, venting products, trailer parts, accessories, and towing components serving the commercial trailer, RV, heavy-duty, marine, agriculture, and manufactured housing markets has an opportunity for a Manufacturing Engineer at our manufacturing facility located in Albion, Indiana. Headquartered in Elkhart, Indiana, Dexter has manufacturing and distribution locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Employing state-of-the-art robotics, precision welding equipment, and automated machining processes, Dexter has achieved many years of success through a commitment to the principles of superior quality, continuous improvement, and unparalleled customer service. The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for supporting production needs for their designated area in the multi-plant manufacturing campus, leading large capital projects with a cross functional team, developing process improvements, and leading implementation on the production floor. Manufacturing floor consists of VTL Okuma, Fanuc Robot Loading and unloading, Fuju, Natco and OKuma.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting production operations during the manufacturing process through technical expertise, structured problem solving, and troubleshooting guidance
  • Developing and maintaining process flow charts and facility layouts
  • Analyzing current processes to find safety and efficiency improvement opportunities
  • Participating in cross functional design reviews to establish standard and custom product designs for new product launches
  • Developing and communicating manufacturing standards for new product launches, project initiatives, and efficiency improvements to all departments
  • Reviewing and Approving Engineering prints and specifications for optimum manufacturability, cost, tooling, and process structure
  • Participating jointly with the Product Design Team to resolve all engineering and design related problems as well as providing manufacturing inputs required for cost-effective designs
  • Analyzing existing mechanical designs for technical understanding and comprehension
  • Designing fixturing, tooling, mechanical components, and assemblies
  • Taking ownership of Mechanical Design from project scope through completion
  • Initiating and participating in departmental or company strategic programs including cycle time analysis, safety, quality, and/or cost improvements
  • Aiding the quality department with audit action items, field service as needed, and any quality issues associated with manufacturing
  • Participating in organized team based continuous improvement projects as needed
  • Self-directing a continuous improvement mentality for daily tasks
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and software (Minitab / Cpk & Ppk)
  • Ability to organize data into presentations for the team members and management
  • Ability to generate operator instruction sheets, quality alerts, and condense complicated processes and data into a clear message for company decisions
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish factual points, and communicate analytical decisions to the team

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or a comparable discipline or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • 3+ years' work experience in a manufacturing setting and CNC background
  • Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software, preference to AutoCAD and Inventor
  • Strong team, leadership, and interpersonal skills enabling you to work with the full range of employees at the manufacturing site
  • Possesses a sense of urgency and ability to meet deadlines
  • Experience with hands-on troubleshooting (mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical) with operators and maintenance technician
  • Knowledge of machine functions and programming
  • Understand manufacturing casting designs and how to manufacture
