About the position

The Materials & Processes Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting NASA's deep space exploration initiatives by providing expertise in materials selection, process control, and qualification for both intravehicular and extravehicular environments. This position involves advising on materials requirements, reviewing engineering documentation, and ensuring compliance with specifications for spaceflight hardware. The engineer will also collaborate with vendors to ensure proper testing and qualification of materials and processes, contributing to the success of human spaceflight systems.

Responsibilities

  • Advise on requirements for Materials & Processes (M&P) for IVA and EVA environments.
  • Provide input to program/project specifications to ensure materials requirements are incorporated.
  • Review project/program documentation and engineering drawings for M&P compliance.
  • Assess vendor processes and define necessary changes for compliance.
  • Recommend qualification and acceptance testing to vendors.
  • Provide inspection and manufacturing process support for human space flight systems.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • 5-10 years of related experience in materials and processes for space applications.
  • Knowledge in materials selection, corrosion prevention, electrical bonding, and failure analysis.
  • Familiarity with metallurgy, including aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, and stainless steels.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.

Nice-to-haves

  • 10 or more years of related work experience with materials and processes.
  • 10 or more years of direct work experience in Metallurgy.
  • Knowledge of industry standards for materials specifications and data analysis.
  • Previous experience in material selection for electrical components and contamination control.
  • Experience working in a precision cleaning laboratory/facility.
  • Previous experience with human space flight system engineering.
