posted 3 months ago
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. It operates a variety of advanced radio telescopes, including the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. These telescopes allow astronomers to explore the universe in unprecedented detail. NRAO is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to work at the Very Large Array, located 50 miles west of Socorro, NM. This position involves carrying out and assisting in engineering analysis, design, and the general execution of projects or whole systems. The role is primarily self-directed, requiring the engineer to follow projects from conception to completion. Responsibilities include making recommendations, coordinating, and assisting in decisions regarding design, procurement, manufacture, erection, testing, and initial operation of systems. The successful candidate will work both independently and as part of a dynamic team. General duties include participating in the fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, determining methods, procedures, and conditions for testing, and ensuring that manufacturing, construction installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and requirements. The engineer will collaborate with other NRAO groups, engineers, and technicians to identify and solve problems, and may also engage in observatory-wide efforts related to problem-solving or new projects. Additionally, the engineer will coordinate and direct the operation, maintenance, and repair of all site equipment, systems, and support systems, assist in preparing cost estimates and timelines, and make recommendations for procedures, equipment purchases, and other improvements. Safety is a priority, and the engineer must comply with safety procedures and take steps to correct unsafe practices.
