About the position

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Engineering Division is seeking multiple Mechanical Engineers to join the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Mechanical Engineering team. This role presents an exciting opportunity to engage in cutting-edge scientific research and engineering innovation within the realm of synchrotron x-ray science. As a Mechanical Engineer at ALS, you will collaborate with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and technicians to support world-class research efforts across various disciplines. Your work will involve developing, troubleshooting, and managing equipment that operates under unique environments, thereby contributing to the ALS's scientific goals. In this position, you will undertake a variety of mechanical engineering tasks, including design and development activities that support specific scientific and engineering programs. You will be responsible for sub-projects and sub-groups within major projects or research programs at LBNL. Your responsibilities will encompass conceptualization, design, planning, implementation, and completion of complex tasks and projects. The Mechanical Engineer will also conduct, coordinate, and contribute significantly to large projects or multiple smaller projects, utilizing independent judgment and decision-making while adhering to schedule and budget constraints. The role requires a working knowledge of basic mechanical engineering concepts and tools, and you will perform tasks using computer-aided design (CAD) and software analysis tools, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA). You will work within project groups to independently resolve project issues using professional engineering concepts and provide guidance to other professional staff as necessary. Additionally, you will prepare technical reports and consult with senior engineers while collaborating with scientific personnel to understand project requirements and needs. At the .3 level, you will also supervise the work of technical and professional staff and may assume critical roles in larger projects or programs.
