About the position

You will be responsible for engineering and management assignments including analyzing and resolving deficient conditions, evaluating design deficiencies, and proposing engineering changes. You will develop and review proposed design modifications to existing TRIDENT submarines systems and equipment with a view toward alleviating potential problems by influencing the hardware design. You will apply shipbuilding/repair methods, principles and practices for hull, mechanical and electrical systems as utilized at the intermediate maintenance activity/shipyard level, including engineering standards and acceptance criteria. You will participate in ongoing NAVSEA Research and Development efforts in various engineering fields, providing input and recommendations relevant to life cycle maintenance and repair of TRIDENT submarines. You will demonstrate skill and persuasiveness to negotiate acceptable compromises that satisfy the constraints of the refit environment and provide for proper safety and function of the ship and its systems. You will exercise a high degree of initiative, judgment, and resourcefulness in the organization, management, and coordination of activities concerned with scheduling and performing nuclear submarine (SSBN) refits and industrial repairs.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and resolve deficient conditions in engineering and management assignments.

  • Apply shipbuilding/repair methods for hull, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Participate in NAVSEA Research and Development efforts.
  • Negotiate acceptable compromises for refit environment constraints.
  • Organize, manage, and coordinate activities for nuclear submarine refits and repairs.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • New employees to the Department of the Navy must pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Current federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements.
  • Retired military members must comply with provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment continuously during work shifts.
  • Work in areas with potentially harmful physical and chemical agents.
  • Must be able to travel to CONUS and OCONUS sites.
  • Must be willing to work onboard ships and in confined spaces.
  • Requires visual acuity and accurate color discrimination.
  • May require shift work and uncommon tours of duty.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in ship or submarine maintenance, alteration, overhaul, or repair.
  • Professional Engineer registration or Engineer Intern certification.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering examination.
