About The Position

The Mechanical Process Development Team works on further developing the processes of recording head fabrication to improve Hard Disc Drive capacity and improve reliability. Our group focuses especially on the topography of the recording head transducer elements and the thin films that are applied to the Air Bearing Surface of the recording head.

Requirements

  • Strong practical lab skills including hands-on operation of capital metrology equipment.
  • Data analysis experience using Excel, JMP or Minitab.
  • Must be highly motivated and self-directed.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic understanding of Contact Mechanics, Metrology Development, Statistics, Data Analysis, Imaging, Image Analysis, Process Engineering.
  • Completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related engineering field.
  • Preferred Bachelors degree and working toward Masters or Ph.D.

Responsibilities

  • Work with an engineering mentor to learn the engineering fundamentals of metrology equipment, tooling, data analysis, and statistics used in recording head development and manufacturing.
  • Perform process & metrology improvement projects to support head overcoat thin film characterization.
  • Receive hands-on training on advanced high precision thin film metrology systems: Reciprocating Wear Test, Atomic Force Microscopes, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray reflectometry (XRR), Ellipsometer, and film stress metrology.
  • Create technical documentation to communicate results to the engineering community and share improvements with factories in Asia.
