About the position

At Aurora Flight Sciences, we design, build, and fly advanced aircraft and enabling technologies from concept to reality. We are searching for a talented and self-motivated Mechanical Systems Staff/Senior Engineer to help us create the future of flight. This position involves leading the mechanical design and integration of air vehicle subsystems, providing subject matter expertise, technical review, design guidance, and mentoring to junior engineers. The role requires performing analysis, modeling, and simulation to ensure that subsystems and components meet the necessary requirements. Additionally, the engineer will manage functional and physical interfaces between vehicle subsystems and the overall vehicle, supporting the definition of requirements for these subsystems. The Mechanical Systems Engineer will also be responsible for supporting component, subsystem, and system-level testing. This includes generating test plans and procedures, executing tests, and analyzing the results to ensure compliance with design specifications. Effective communication is crucial, as the engineer will need to relay information about vehicle subsystem design, requirements, and performance between the design team, management, customers, subcontractors, and vendors. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the mechanical systems are designed and integrated effectively to meet the operational needs of advanced aircraft.

  • Lead the mechanical design and integration of air vehicle subsystems.
  • Provide subject matter expertise, technical review, design guidance, and mentoring.
  • Perform analysis, modeling, and simulation to verify subsystems and components meet requirements.
  • Manage functional and physical interfaces between vehicle subsystems and the vehicle.
  • Support definition of requirements for air vehicle subsystems.
  • Support component, subsystem, and system-level testing, including generating test plans and procedures, executing tests, and analyzing test results.
  • Communicate information about vehicle subsystem design, requirements, and performance between the design team, management, customer, subcontractors, and vendors.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and virtual communication skills.
  • Must be a U.S. Person.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience leading the development of aerospace systems, from conceptual design through production.
  • Experience with finite element analysis, multi-body dynamics analysis, kinematics, and/or thermal analysis.
  • Experience with system architecture design and performance analysis.
  • Experience with system engineering processes, such as requirements development, system safety assessment, failure hazard analysis, and reliability analysis.
  • Project management experience, such as scheduling, cost estimation, earned value management, and reporting.
  • Hands-on experience working with machine shops, specifying fasteners, bearings, and other hardware, integrating prototype aircraft, and conducting performance tests.
  • Experience designing commercial and/or military certified aircraft.
  • Experience with business capture and early concept development of mechanical systems for commercial, government, or military aircraft applications.
