The University of Pittsburgh Physicians Department of Urology is seeking a dedicated and skilled Medical Assistant to join their team at Mercy. This full-time position operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, providing a structured work schedule that allows for a balanced work-life environment. The role may require travel to other Urology offices within the Pittsburgh area to meet staffing needs, ensuring flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic healthcare setting. As a Medical Assistant, you will gain hands-on clinical experience in a specialty practice, working closely with physicians and patients. Your responsibilities will include assisting with catheter changes, setting up and assisting with procedures, and managing the cleaning and reprocessing of instruments after procedures such as prostate biopsies and cystoscopies. Responsibilities

  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA and other regulations.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed.
  • Schedule appointments and verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Prepare patient rooms and set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Manage inventory of supplies and restock exam/procedure rooms as necessary.
  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure rooms and assist them as needed.
  • Collect patient information/history, take vitals, and perform screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Relay instructions to patients/families and provide pertinent information including patient education as directed.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and document patient information into the medical record.
  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.
  • Administer injectable medication and vaccines under the direction and supervision of a physician.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology are necessary.
  • CPR certification based on AHA standards required within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
